During times of severe weather, protecting yourself and your home are top priorities, but what about your neighbor?
If you are able to, check on your neighbors to make sure they're okay. Older adults and young children are more at risk in extreme cold. Just a moment of your time can mean a lot to someone who may need help! Don’t forget to check on their pets as well.
Help make it safer for your neighbors to get around. If you are able, treat or shovel the snow and ice from sidewalks and paths.
If you know your neighbor is without power and you have another heating source or power, invite them in to warm up until the power is back on.
Likewise, if you find yourself without heat or safe shelter in extreme cold weather events, don’t be reluctant to reach out to others for assistance.
It is also important to remember that just because the sun is out, doesn’t mean that the snow and ice are melting. Temperatures are not expected to be above freezing until at least Wednesday. Travel is highly discouraged. Travel on the roadways makes slush which in turn will make for frozen ice and much more dangerous conditions than snow. Please stay at home unless there is an emergency.
