Utility Increase in Support for Infrastsructure Improvements

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality Control (TCEQ) requires wastewater providers to begin the wastewater treatment expansion process once the current plant has reached a 75% capacity level for three consecutive months. Per state requirements, the City of Marble Falls has initiated the planning and design process to expand the wastewater treatment facility capacity.

Currently, the Marble Falls Wastewater Treatment Plant:

  • Is permitted for 1.5 million gallons of wastewater treatment daily
  • Exceeded 75% from January 2019 to March 2019, at 76% being 1.125 million gallons per day (MGD)

To maintain the most affordable rates possible for all customers, the City water and wastewater utilities operate on a revenue-neutral budget. Issuance of bonds is needed to fund substantial projects.

In the 2019-2020 fiscal year, the City issued $2.185 million of bonds to fund continued improvements to the Water and Wastewater plants. These funds are to initiate the design of expanding capacity at the Wastewater Treatment Plant and for the rehabilitation of an aging water clarifier at the Water Treatment Plant.

To support the annual payments for the bonds, the City must increase utility rates. There is no increase on the irrigation rate or bulk water rate. The rate increase will average 8%.

Customers can expect to see the increase reflected in their November water bill sent November 30, 2019.

“The 2018 flood revealed some vulnerabilities in our current treatment plant that will need to be considered as we move forward. We want to take a look at all of our options to determine the best long-term solution for our City.” – Mike Hodge, City Manager
